Here is some information on the New YorkState Snowmobile Safety Course.
The course is being sponsored by the South Warren Snowmobile Club. Instructors are members of the club and certified by NYS to offer the course.
The course will be at Van R. Rhodes Volunteer Firehouse (Luzerne- Hadley Fire Dept.), 35 State Route9N in LakeLuzerne. The firehouse is located just north of the Saratoga/ WarrenCountyline. The class is scheduled for Saturday Jan 5th @ 8:30AM until 4:30PM.This course is FREE and is open to anyone who is 10 or older. It is an excellent class for the new and inexperienced snowmobile rider. The seasoned rider will learn a few things too.
The course covers these topics and more;
Overview of the sport; history of snowmobiling, the importance of snowmobile clubs, snowmobile safety etc.
Getting acquainted with your snowmobile; respecting the performance capabilities, parts of the sled, safety features, personalizing the machine, maintenance & repair, pre-season tune up, summer storage, etc.
NY Laws and Regulations; age requirements, registration, insurance, operating restrictions, accidents and NYS laws, etc.
Pre Ride preparation; planning trips, clothing, equipment, pre ride check over, etc.
Riding skills; starting, riding, positioning, snow conditions, night riding, passengers, navigation, hand signals, theft prevention, etc.
Trail Emergencies; towing a disabled sled, medical emergencies, getting lost, etc. ,
Trailering your snowmobile; preparation, loading and unloading, securing, maintenance and theft prevention, etc.
NYS law requires that a youth 10 -13 need a NYS Snowmobile Safety Course Certificate, if they plan on riding a sled on any property not owned/leased by them. They must also have an adult 18 or over within 500 feet. Youth 14 -17 must have a NYS Snowmobile Safety Course Certificate to ride alone on any property not owned/leased by them.
To complete the course, a student must be 10 years old on January 5th and must attend the entire class. They must receive at least a score of 75% on the final examination. A temporary certificate will be issued upon successful completion of the course. We will do everything we can, to assist all students. Our goal is to have everyone achieve a certificate.
If your child has a developmental delay or learning disability, let us know ahead of time and we can assist the child with the taking of the test.
If you choose to leave your child, you must provide us with and emergency phone number. Parents are welcome to stay. If you would like to receive the NYS Safety Certificate, you must be pre-registered for the class. You may be eligible for a discount on your snowmobile insurance. Check with you insurance company.
You may bring food or beverages. We ask you to clean up after yourself.
No tobacco or alcohol use is permitted.
If your child has a history of disruptive behavioral problems, you need to stay to supervise them. Anyone who interferes or disrupts the class will be asked to leave. No exceptions.
